Erasmus plus

CELTA is an internationally recognised certificate for teachers of English. International House Bratislava recently became an approved CELTA training centre and I went to the Czech Republic to become trained to be a CELTA tutor so that our school can provide the opportunity for teachers to become qualified here in Slovakia. My course ran for four weeks in July 2021 with two tutors (one British and one American) and 10 trainees from a number of countries (Czech Republic, Russia, Poland, Italy and Turkey).

The course consisted primarily of delivering theoretical input sessions to the candidates, observing their teaching practice, giving feedback on their teaching, monitoring their progress, and assessing their written assignments. At the beginning of the training course, I mainly observed the established tutors, their techniques and approaches to getting the best out of the candidates, and noting which areas the candidates needed most work on. Then, after discussions and in collaboration with the tutors, I delivered three input sessions myself (on speaking skills, reviewing lexis, and future forms), gave written and oral feedback to candidates on their teaching practice and lesson planning, helped the candidates develop action points for future training, shadow marked their four written assignments, and shadow graded their portfolios which were submitted to Cambridge English for assessment.

I have now gained the necessary qualifications and skills to be a CELTA tutor and now look forward to delivering this course to candidates in Slovakia.
