Looking under the ‘’bonnet’’ of English (DELTA Module One)

When one decides to develop their skills and work on their understanding of how to teach a language, they oftentimes may approach it from various possible angles. You may wish to discover different teaching methods and their relevance throughout history, or you might explore a more technical side of the language to understand the underlying processes behind it. Others prefer a more hands-on approach and get practical, so to speak. However, a few daring, albeit indecisive, souls may like to ‘try it all out’. This is where DELTA, an advanced blend of theory and practice, enters the scene. My journey consisted of a DELTA Module One preparation course, the first of the total three modules. This project was made possible thanks to the International House Bratislava which has been taking part in the Erasmus + project.

This module, the most theoretical one of the three, took place in Prague at the International House Prague in July 2021 and lasted two weeks in total. During this time with my colleagues from Russia and Czechia, we explored the grammatical aspect of English, from syntax and parts of speech, through semantics of English and how different cultures perceive seemingly similar words differently, to phonetics and morphology. The course has been described as exhaustive and eye-opening by many of the candidates for its attention to even the smallest of details and for the plethora of both academic and nonacademic resources which the school always made available to us. The teachers always made sure we understood everything and supported us during the entire journey. After each session, we received assignments to further study about the topic and at the end of each week we took part in a mock test which content wise reflected the actual exam one has to sit for if they wish to pass this module successfully (the official exam is usually not included in the preparation course).

This course has provided me with an insight into the theoretical world of teaching English and offered me plenty of resources to use in my teaching along with a much deeper understanding of the intricate processes taking place under the bonnet of the English language. I believe the knowledge gained during this course will easily translate into my teaching and make learning easier and more enjoyable for my students.
