The plenary session will be led by Leslie Hendra, the co-author of English Unlimited.
SHAKING UP GRAMMAR: A goals- and context-based approach
Compare these sentences: "If it rains, I'll stay at home." "If you like sushi, you'll love this restaurant." The second is truly context-based and meets the CEF goal 'give recommendations'. The aim of this talk is to give you concrete ideas to use or adapt for your own classrooms. We'll examine ways to make grammar presentation more meaningful and therefore easier for learners to understand, produce and retain. Drawing on examples from different levels of English Unlimited, we'll look at how to help learners achieve real-life, CEF-based goals by using this motivating goals- and context-based approach.
Leslie Anne Hendra (MA University of Toronto) is a teacher and teacher trainer, who spent fifteen years teaching and writing in-house course materials in Japan and four years teaching and training at International House London. Co-author of the adult English course English Unlimited (Cambridge University Press), she has given talks and workshops across Europe and in Japan on various aspects of English language teaching. She is particularly interested in intercultural awareness, the lexical approach and speaking strategies. She lives in London and Scotland.
